Playmate, a song by Olive B on Spotify

One of our favorite songwriters just released a new song, go stream Olive B's 'Playmate' now

May 17, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Contemporary R&B, Pop, R&B, Electronic

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist: ‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Olive B landed on our radar with her collaborations with house producer Bobby Love. So naturally, when we found out she released her own single, we were pretty excited to check it out… and upon hearing it, we were blown away.

Olive possesses a very passionate and metaphorical writing style (which was what initially grabbed our attention with her past material). Her lyrics are a work of art and cut deep into the soul and reveal what makes each of us human. It’s honest and reflective and there’s something special about the energy she reveals throughout her music that one simply can’t ignore.

Her voice is soft and angel-like as it dances around the instrumental and you can’t help but get lost in a daydream whenever she starts to sing. So kick back, close your eyes, and enjoy this for what it is. Simply amazing.

Olive’s EP is scheduled to be released May 29th so don’t forget to connect with her online to be the first to check it out. Enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

The song was inspired by a relationship I was in, where I felt fully committed to this person, and eventually, it became one-sided. He didn’t seem to care about me, but he put more effort in when I acted the way I thought he wanted me to. The song is split between a vulnerable submissive side and one where I felt powerful and comfortable with being myself. At first, writing this track was emotional, but the more I started writing the more empowered I felt. — Olive B

spend some time alone inside my head, a song by Philip Brooks on Spotify

Philip Brooks releases dreamy indie pop single 'spend some time alone inside my head'

May 01, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Indie, Indie Pop

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

We’re super excited about this new release from London based artist Philip Brooks. For fans of indie-pop, bedroom-pop, or dream-pop, Philip Brooks brings an infectiously catchy and lovable sound to his music. The songwriting is brilliantly written, easy to digest, and incredibly fun. Right now we’re enjoying pretty much everything Philip has to offer, from his music, to his branding, and even the art direction behind the entire project. Give it a spin for yourself to see what all the hype is about and discover your new favorite song. Enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“This song sums up my struggle with mental health. Not only does getting better need a lot of personal effort that I've been running away from and denying myself in the past, it's often confronted with lack of sympathy by those that don't experience mental issues themselves. I believe many people feel tired of their problems being trivialized – just like me. So I'm trying to open up the dialogue and help people obtain better understanding of what it's like to go through what many people endure on a daily basis. 'It will get better' phrases won't help, but empathy will, and more mindfulness will go a long way.”  — Philip Brooks

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Emily Rowed has become a favorite of the Gems & Secrets platform. Her singles ‘Pinball’ and ‘Watercolors’ immediately grabbed our attention and her creative spark is something that keeps us always coming back for more.

The lyrical depth behind her music is not only poetic but its rich in emotion. Her talents go far beyond just her creative writing though… her voice, her presence, and of course her vision are all pieces of a puzzle that are slowly, but surely, coming together in the most exciting way.

“Watercolors is about an effortless, flowing love that came out of nowhere,” says Rowed. “It was hypnotic - everything turned into sweet purples and vintage film.”

So naturally, when we received the stripped down version of her latest work of art, we were absolutely thrilled. ‘Watercolors’ (Live) highlights the deep imagery behind her lyrics and the pure talent of her voice and writing style. Give it a listen and fall in love with Emily Rowed once and for all and enjoy!

LYRICS:

I said I would never ever movie to LA

Now I am chasing every paper plane

for another minute

for another minute

with you in it

with you in it

You’re loving me like watercolors

watercolors

You’re loving me like watercolors

watercolors

I filmed you walking in the Venice waves

I fall in love again replaying the tape

for another minute

for another minute

I can hold it

I can hold it

You’re loving me like watercolors

watercolors

You’re loving me like watercolors

watercolors

we blend into each other

fade into the other

I’m on a paper plane

I’m moving to LA

You’re loving me like watercolors

You’re loving me like watercolors

RK1, an album by Robokid on Spotify

Robokid's 'RK1' mixtape review (feat. Hotel Garuda, Kid Froopy, AObeats, & Manila Killa)

March 12, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Electronic

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Robokid released his mixtape Friday and we’ve had the entire project on repeat since. When we tried brainstorming what we would review (seeming how more than several of the tracks have already been featured on our platform) we decided to switch things up for once. So, let it be known, this isn’t so much a mixtape review, but more of an appreciation post for the amount of hard work that has been put into ‘RK1’.

Not only does the mixtape feature collaborations with artists like Hotel Garuda, Manila Killa, Kid Froopy, and AObeats.. but it includes 4 new tracks highlighting the diverse style of an artist that not only stands out creatively and lyrically, but further instills the idea that honing such a unique sound takes patience, determination, and of course, a lot of hard work.

Everything from the artwork, to the typography, to even the vocal effects and sound design are unique. And to be honest, we see a lot of artists attempt to do what Robokid is doing, but unfortunately, it just isn’t the same.

You can’t fake authenticity and that’s exactly what Robokid stands for. Even when it comes to his work outside of writing and producing music. The artist runs a record label, creates meaningful art, and even shares his love for the fashion world on a daily basis.

As you listen through, pay attention to the details of the track and to the lyrics. Pay attention to how the artist performs from track to track, and last, allow this project to inspire you in your own work going forward. Don’t forget to subscribe to the artist online to stay up to date on his upcoming tour with Slayyyter and enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

"This mixtape is special because it’s the first full-length body of work I am putting out after transitioning from DJ-ing and producing to writing and recording full songs. I wanted to develop a sound that was influenced by all my favorite music I loved while growing up mixed with today’s production styles. I feel that this mixtape is an exploration of the sonics of pop music from the late 80s and 90s, mixed with now, as well as laced with personal excerpts about the past and present." — Robokid
