FIRE ON MARZZ, an album by BENEE on Spotify

Stream BENEE's 6-track EP 'FIRE ON MARZZ' (because it's really good and you'll like it)

July 08, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Pop

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

We took our time to review BENEE’s ‘FIRE ON MARZZ’ for a couple of reasons. But in all honesty, when it comes down to it (and this is no bullshit), it deserves your full attention. For us, we fell in love with ‘Evil Spider’ back in May and featured it on our site. So when news broke out surrounding the EP release, expectations coming into it were already high because we knew this was something special.

But what could we possibly say without sounding cliche or boring? The project itself is far from dull, in fact, it’s everything we could hope for when discovering a new artist. There’s an excitement that rushes through your mind as one song ends and a new one begins. Building off and complimenting one another like a perfectly choreographed dance—all while maintaining the highest form of originality and flair.

This is the kind of project that will inspire artists (in more ways than one) for years to come; because on a crowded stage, BENEE stands out amongst the noise. From her lyrics, to her outstanding performance, BENEE’s vision and talent demands your attention with fierceness and class.. All together, from the polished production, beautiful mixing, and her incredibly diverse writing style, ‘FIRE ON MARZZ’ will remain a personal favorite of ours for YEARS, some say even through the ‘Afterlife’.

Needless to say (but we’ll say it anyway), BENEE is a rising star. From her personality, her sound, and her vision, there’s not enough of her to go around… and we could definitely use it (no pressure). Don’t forget to connect with BENEE online to stay up to date on any upcoming tour dates or shows and enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“When it came to coming up with a name for my EP, what first came to mind was wanting a phrase that was a big old explosion, because that’s kinda what the EP feels like to me. I came up with the name FIRE ON MARZZ and thought it did the best job at not really relating to any song in the EP. I didn’t think there was a phrase that could sum them all up.” — BENEE

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

"Check$ is dedication to my mother. As the daughter of two Khmer Rouge genocide survivors, I have watched my parents sacrifice their own well being to make sure I had a fair chance at a better life in America. Struggling with severe PTSD and mental illness from the atrocities my parents experienced, I wrote this song the same day my mother was omitted to the hospital during the summer of 2016. As a child of a refugee, this has been a constant battle growing up. That day, I had two options; stay home and weep, or write about it.  So I decided to express my gratitude and also part guilt for choosing this unconventional life as a singer songwriter. If i could give the whole world to my family, I would. But for now, all I have is my love.” - SATICA

We love this music video for Sleepy Soul's 'Still Can't Dance', watch it here!

June 13, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Electronic

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

We’re in love with Sleepy Soul’s music video for ‘Still Can’t Dance’. The new single, which features a creative texture and soundscape utilizes influences from the sounds of lo-fi, hip-hop, and electro-pop. It’s easy to kick back and relax to, but it also makes you want to get up and dance. The glitchy elements keep things interesting and the vocal production is infectiously catchy. It’s just one of those songs that you find yourself going back to over and over again.

Don’t forget to connect with Sleepy Soul online to stay up to date on any upcoming releases and enjoy!

A WORD FROM SLEEPY SOUL:

I’ve always wanted to write a dance song. I love the way the singer paints an image of the idyllic night between two impassioned dancers: the heat, the lights, the finesse, the exactness and cool smolder of every move.

In the lyrics, I paint the ideal scene of a couple’s locked eyes from across the hazy yet electrified dance floor (a lot of which is drawn from my favorite Earth Wind and Fire/Michael Jackson/Bee Gees lyrics). The counterpart makes their way through the crowded dance floor, only to find that the narrator (definitely me, I won’t speak for Nick), cannot dance whatsoever - the proof is in the music video.

Anyway, the message behind the song is that you don’t have to be able to dance well, just go out in confidence and enjoy yourself. And, at the end of the day, that’s all that truly matters.

A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR (DUSTIN CARTER):

While listening to Sleepy Soul’s, “Still Can’t Dance”, I found myself connecting with the idea of facing obstacles. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get past the idea of someone not being able to dance. I mean, it is right there in the lyrics, so might as well embrace it. But, as I began to shape that idea, it became a matter of deciding whether the obstacles in the way of being able to dance were physical or mental.

Mike Dalton (D.P. / other half of Stolen Sun) and I put together a shot-list of our must have shots, but also allotted some time to experiment and discover some new shots. We were lucky to have a super talented cast and crew push the vision forward throughout our two days of shooting.

Collaborating with Sleepy Soul on this video has been such an incredible experience. Their music doesn’t need a video to make it stand out - It standouts all on it’s own - but I’ll definitely take advantage of a great song to make cool video.

With or Without You, an album by Olive B on Spotify

ALBUM REVIEW: Olive B releases debut album 'With or Without You' [R&B/Pop]

June 06, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Electronic, R&B, Pop

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Titled ‘With or Without You, the new album from Olive B features a total of 8 new songs. Influenced by the sounds of R&B and Pop, ‘With or Without You’ is produced exceptionally well—you can thank Bobby Love for that.

On our first listen, we were instantly hooked by Olive’s writing style and charm. The lyrics are beautifully written and the energy behind her performance radiates a positive and demanding energy. Whether it’s dance, pop, or R&B… Olive B infuses magic into everything she touches and will keep you coming back for more.

On our second listen, the details of the production started to come out and we were able to drift off to the many melodies and production elements present throughout the album. From reverb-drenched guitars, to luscious soundscapes, to punchy kicks and dark undertones… it’s a diverse project that can be enjoyed from start to finish and features a timeless experience you’ll enjoy for years to come.

On our third, fourth, and fifth listen… (I think you get the point).

In conclusion, ‘With or Without You’ is a 10/10 album and it exceeded all of our expectations. We recommend listening through the album from start to finish to get the full effect, but don’t worry, it’ll be the best 24 minutes you’ll spend all week.

Don’t forget to connect with Olive B online to stay up to date on any upcoming shows and enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“The listener is taken on a journey through the stages of a relationship from beginning to end of the album. The first half is upbeat, fun and playful, and encapsulates being in love and getting to know someone intimately. Midway through the album, there is a shift in tone that represents the uncertainty of the future you have with that person. Towards the end is realizing it won’t last, the process of letting go, and saying goodbye for now. — Olive B
