Twitch, a song by Katie Buchanan on Spotify

Katie Buchanan's 'Twitch' is one of the best songs you'll hear today

March 27, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Indie

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Every once in awhile an artist lands on our radar that absolutely blows our mind. This time, that certain someone is Katie Buchanan. Her latest is a work of art, titled ‘Twitch’, we immediately fall in love with the guitar melody. As a writer, performer, producer, and guitarist… Katie is a multi-talented artist to her core. The lyrical depth behind her music is pure magic. It’s heartfelt, it’s genuine, and it demands your attention in ways you never thought possible.

We can’t stress enough just how much we love this song and we know you will too once you give it a shot. Add it to your Spotify playlist and be sure to give the artist a follow to stay up to date on any upcoming shows/releases and enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

""Twitch" is about the kind of anxiety that keeps you up all night, the wordless worries and the fights you forget to have, the teeth grinding insomnia that requires an appointment with your dentist.

As a writer, I wanted to pair jam-packed, twisted lyrics to a cyclical, meditative guitar line: the same way the most dense thoughts fly through your head in the stillest of hours. And as a producer, I wanted to stretch the concept of a guitar-loop pop song: the "loop" here is played live in one take, the instrumental break lives somewhere between melodic synth and brash guitar solo, the drums are both bombastic and contained.

In the end though, "Twitch" is a handful of snapshots: the nights you can't sleep, the days you can't fight, and the space in between when you realize that sometimes that's okay." —

Fireworks, a song by Hazlett on Spotify

Have you checked out Hazlett's 'Fireworks' yet? Stream it here!

March 14, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Indie

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

When it comes to writing from the heart, Hazlett’s latest is an honest reflection of just that. Titled ‘Fireworks’, we love the instrumentation. The entire soundscape from start to finish feels a bit like a dream. A dream that is slowly fading away. And of course, the vocal style is incredible. The lyrical depth behind Hazlett’s writing is powerful, it’s deep, it’s moving, but at its core… it’s emotional and it comes from a genuine place. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think down below. Don’t forget to connect with the artist online to stay up to date on any upcoming releases and enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“I wrote this song after a night in Croatia with my then girlfriend. We bought some cheap fireworks from the corner store and set them off a rooftop after dinner. It was bittersweet, they made magic look so easy and all I wanted was for her to look at me like that. But I think if you have it, you have it. Love shouldn’t be work, love is magic.” — Hazlett

Official music video for "gold" by Michael Paradise, released Feb 28, 2019.

Have you checked out Michael Paradise's 'gold' yet? Stream it here 🎶

March 06, 2019 by Gems Secrets in Bedroom Pop, Indie

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

For fans of chill-wave and bedroom pop, Michael Paradise’s ‘gold’ is right up your alley. For us, we love the entire soundscape of the track. It’s brilliantly produced and the instrumentation is both relaxing and calming. There’s a level of depth behind the lyrics that keep us intrigued and the mixing sounds solid from start to finish. Go check it out for yourself and let us know what you think down below. Don’t forget to connect with the artist online to stay up to date on any upcoming releases and enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“the concept for gold came from thinking about how we always want more out of our lives, our relationships, our experiences. I think it’s simply a product of living in such an intensely capitalistic world -- the result is an inability to be satisfied. The line ‘looking back I wanted more, all that ice and gold’ felt like it captured both this capitalist greed for more wealth and status, but also that emotional and social desire to be cool. It also felt a bit playful because I’m not one to ever be iced out haha.” — Michael Paradise

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“I wrote the words and music for this one really quickly late one evening, and looking back on the words after doing it I still can't work out if it's about a relationship between two people, or more generally concerned about the idea of not being able to get things done or achieve certain ideas about things, or dreams etc.. I think it's probably bits of both. I've wanted to release it for a long time so I'm really excited it's finally coming out.”

LYRICS:

In a stuck state of mind,
I've been here all the time

The only reason I know loud and clear you're truly mine,
Not a big fan of sharing games as a child,
Sorry if you think it's wild,
That's the way I live and die

Die every day; A couple times tonight,
but I come back to life, I've been dead a thousand times

If you think you're a fox,
come catch me in a lie.

I'd like to see you try (try)

Chorus:
Why you disrespect?
Why you disrespect me?

Why do you neglect?
How do you forget me?
If I give you a sec, will you come and get me?

Tell me not to fret,
Don't you
Don't you
Disrespect me

Why do you
Why do you
Why do you
(x2)

Why
Why

Verse 2:
I'm a psycho, an angel, perfect devil child
The things you fear inside; I tuck in with me at night

and if you think you're alone,
you know you're probably right,

still there's a chance to fight,
so fight
fight

Chorus

December 26, 2018 by Gems Secrets in Indie

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Blue Wilson is the solo project of songwriter and producer, Michael Stevenson. Last week, the talented musician shared with us their breathtaking music video for their new song ‘Big Rock’ and upon seeing it for the first time, we knew this project was gonna be special. Everything from Michael’s writing style, to the instrumentation and soundscape throughout the track, to even the beautiful cinematography around the music video.

There’s something truly magical about this project and the genuine energy that radiates off of Michael’s voice is enough to keep us attentive and aching for more... enjoy!

WHAT THE ARTIST HAS TO SAY:

“Once Stephen, the director, and I landed on the idea of ice skating cowboys, we knew casting could be difficult. We heard whispers of a man named ‘wild john’, a sort of enigmatic figure in the greater Los Angeles ice skating scene - and upon watching a YouTube video of his skating we knew he was our guy. Tonally, we wanted to match the nostalgic and romantic quality of the song and I think we achieved that really well within a fairly loose narrative structure. Stephen and I had discussed creating a video that was almost hyper-cinematic- Hype Williams style- to juxtapose the lo-fi quality of the song. I think too often ‘bedroom/indie” artists fall into the same mindset that their videos need to have a faux-vintage / VHS aesthetic and I wanted to steer clear from that.“
