WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Newcomer and promising new producer demotapes shared his new single “closerthanthis” with us last week as part of bitbird's “Create Together” community compilation. And sure, we might come off bias, but demotapes—real name Parker Livingston—has been writing some of our favorite songs for years (under this and other projects like Cassette Tapes).

Stream music by Cassette Tapes here

So naturally, it shouldn’t be a surprise when we say that “closerthanthis” is in fact our favorite release on the compilation. Not to take away from the incredible talent and lineup this community album has to offer. But if this is your first time hearing demotapes in action, just wait till you hear the rest of his discography.

Blending lush melodies, catchy hooks and smooth… vibrant synths. It’s hard to pass up on something this good. Setting himself apart from the rest, we’re confident that you’ll fall in love with the mind behind demotapes on your first listen. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think. Stream this emotional new single from GRAE "Like You" here

July 06, 2021 by Toby Boston in Acoustic, Indie

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist:

‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

“Like You” is a subdued yet striking piece of work. It's not over-complicated nor did we feel it was overdone or exaggerated to get the point across. The stripped-down song brings what matters most into focus, accentuating the light, playful, yet vulnerable lyrics. From multi-instrumentalist / songwriter GRAE, “Like You” carries a strong undertone of 80s new wave music, which carries notes of the likes of The Cure and Depeche Mode.

GRAE is making new-wave pop music that’s both nostalgic and boundary-breaking and it’s safe to say we’ll be keeping a close eye on the rising artist as time goes on. In the meantime, check it out for yourself and don’t forget to connect with GRAE online to stay up to date.

New Paper Idol out now, stream "Clouds" here

July 03, 2021 by Toby Boston in Bedroom Pop, Electronic, Electro Pop, Indie, Pop

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist:

‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

The final chapter in a six-part series, 'Castles' is the final release of Paper Idol's EP 'Mania Days'. Blending catchy indie-electronica synths with sharp and punchy electronic production. The songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer showcases his talents in the latest single, with minimalist verses comprising purely of synths, drums and vocals, leading into a crisp, sparkling dance drop while beautifully blending punchy bass-lines with sharp synths.

“Mania Days is a six-part story about a boy named Paper whose broken heart leads him on a delusional adventure. Castles is the final chapter in the story – Paper’s mania wears off and he crashes back down to reality. The song is about my experience moving to LA to make music. I had these huge expectations for success, often fueled by people in the industry, and thought it would require little time or effort to reach that success. “Castles” is about leaving fairy tales behind and realizing that you need to work hard and stay determined to reach your goals”

This is by far a personal favorite of ours and we’re excited for you to hear it too. So go ahead and check it out for yourself and let us know what you think. Don’t forget to connect with Paper Idol online to stay up to date and enjoy!

Kinck shared the leading, self-produced single from her upcoming EP “No Small Talk Pt 2” with us this week. Titled “Trouble In Paradise”, the new single features light, floating keys with smooth vocals leading into a gritty, spacey chorus and an unforgettable melody. Kinck creates a raw, minimalist soundscape, layering ambient melodies with sharp 808's and punchy drums… “Trouble In Paradise” is hard to pass up.

Don't be a "Fool", stream Andrew Applepie's new single here

July 03, 2021 by Toby Boston in Alternative, Electro Pop, Indie Pop, Indie, Pop, Rock

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist:

‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Starting off with a raw, grungy drum beat that blends flawlessly into a light, summery bop… is this warm, indie-pop single from on of our favorites, Andrew Applepie. Titled 'Fool', the songwriter / producer is turning things up a notch. Written as a reminder to himself and a message to others, Applepie finds sincere words that get under your skin:

"So when I end up next time, just pretending I'm fine, I can come back here, I can tell you: Yes, somehow I'm ok with this cause it's not that bad. Somehow, I'll always be a fool. You should try it, too, sometime."

'Fool' is also about falling in love, not being put off by the awkwardness that comes from the different tempo and the different needs of two people, but accepting and celebrating the foolishness that we display. Go ahead and check it out for yourself and let us know what you think down below. Don’t forget to connect with Andrew Applepie online and enjoy!

Watch the music video for Tim Ayre's "Modern Life" here

June 22, 2021 by Toby Boston in Indie, Indie Pop, Psychedelic, Rock

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist:

‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Sydney based musician, composer, and vocalist… Tim Ayre released his brand new EP titled “Modern Life”. This particular track pairs soulful keys with soft samba drums to create a dreamy synth soundscape. Creating an almost iridescent atmosphere with his sounds, the composer, singer and songwriter channels influences from The Beach Boys to even the likes of Daft Punk.

Tim says: "I'm really proud of this EP, I feel like the intention to write music that reminded me of more positive times and this idea of traveling the world has come through. Despite the fact we're still in this weird ongoing uncertainty I hope the record can give people a feeling of positivity. I feel like if you sit by the window and play it start to finish, you can almost daydream like you went on a holiday."

Everything from the visual to the songwriting are impressive and we’re confident you’ll fall in love just like we did. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think. Don’t forget to connect with the artist online to stay up to date and enjoy!

Cy's "Don't Sleep With My Ex" cuts deep, stream the artist's new single here

June 18, 2021 by Toby Boston in Alternative, Electro Pop, Pop, Punk, Rock

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist:

‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Rising alt-pop star Cy shared her dazzling new single with us, titled ‘Don’t Sleep With My Ex’, let’s just say she has our full attention now. In a stylish balance of soft R&B-melodies and distorted guitars, Cy shares a messy breakup story involving her ex-girlfriend and best friend. Following up on her critically acclaimed debut single, it feels like things can only go up from here. Blending punk-pop influences with sweeping hooks… “Don’t Sleep With My Ex” demands your attention in all of the best ways.

“I was a ticking bomb when I came to the studio that day and all of my anger and confusion just exploded into this song. It’s not about me hating on someone’s relationship, but rather about feeling betrayed by a close friend”, Cy says. “Whenever I’m wondering if I’m exaggerating and being petty about two people finding love, I go back and listen to this song. It makes me remember that some things you might not be able to forgive, and that’s okay.”

We’re excited to see what the artist has in stored for us next, but until then, we’ll just have to keep the new single on repeat. Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think. Don’t forget to connect with Cy online to stay up to date and enjoy!

Watch the music video for Marian Hill and Yung Baby Tate's "oOo that's my type" here

June 18, 2021 by Toby Boston in Electro Pop, R&B, Pop

Listen to this song in our official Spotify playlist:

‘Discovering The Undiscovered’

WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY:

Powerhouse duo Marian Hill return with their signature minimal and gritty sound, returning to the forefront of innovative alt-electronic music with the new single 'oOo that's my type'. The new single marks the road towards Marian Hill’s upcoming album fusing elements of hip-hop, R&B, and pop into their eclectic electronic soundscape. The new single ends with a smooth and seductive finish, blending gritty bass with warbling vocal effects and delicately percussive found sounds, a signature combo that we can’t get enough of.

"Before the pandemic, we'd gotten a bit jaded," share Marian Hill. "The excitement of a career in music had worn off, and there were moments when we thought about walking away. Then, of course, something that had never happened before happened. When everything stops, you really take stock of what you have. Marian Hill gave both of us the lives we'd always dreamed of, and kept us going during the darkest times yet. In a year when Samantha found herself turning 30 in her childhood bedroom and Jeremy suffered a traumatic injury to both of his wrists, the music we made for Marian Hill gave us something to feel good about in a world full of uncertainty. For a few moments each day, we could get lost in a song, and pretend we were playing it for you. And we made our favourite album yet."

We’re excited to hear the new material and even more excited about the visuals Marian Hill has planned for us. In the meantime, keep “oOo that’s my type” on repeat and check back often for updates. Don’t forget to connect with the artist online and enjoy!
